If you have collections on your credit report that show a balance even though you have paid them off, they are obviously hurting your credit profile. I think you could compare it to changing your oil vs fixing your transmission. You can change the oil in your car if you have the right tools. Unless you are a transmission mechanic you are not going to fix your transmission even if you have the right tools.
